The top 10 hair tips from stylist Melissa Wagner

Tip #1:

Don’t use too much product in your hair when you are going to blow dry. Use only the necessary amount and distribute it evenly throughout the hair. The more stuff in your hair, the longer it will take to blow dry. The longer it takes, the more stress you put on your hair.

Amy Adams PicsTip #2:

Color-safe shampoos will help lock-in color, but did you know it’s almost more important to keep your water temperature closer to tepid? Extremely hot water will open up the cuticle layer of your hair, releasing color molecules as well as much needed shine.

Tip #3:

When you want to maximize shine, opt for a light-weight spray gloss. Heavy serums just make hair look greasy and attract dirt out of the air. To make the shine really last, apply spray gloss to each section before polishing with a flat iron.

Tip #4:

Blow drys stay bouncy and keep their volume if you use your “cool shot” button. Hair is still forming and malleable while it’s warm, so you don’t want your fresh blow dry settling against your head- that will make it flat and stiff. Conclude your blow-out thoroughly COOLING your root area.

Ali Larter PicsTip #5:

Tame frizzes by using a clip to keep your blow dry sections organized. The clip will help separate your dry areas from your damp ones. Be sure to keep the air flow aimed down the hair shaft. If you shoot air up into the scalp area, you will end up fuzzy.

Tip #6:

Revitalize fading color or dull ends with a clear gloss treatment. Clear glosses won’t taint the color, but it will restore shine and sparkle. It will smooth and seal the cuticle thus eliminating fly-aways. A glossing treatment can even make your color look better longer in between touch-ups. It’s like lipgloss for your hair!

Tip #7:

Bangs are the best way to update long hair and they offer a plethora of options. Cutting in bangs or “fringe” from scratch is something that’s best left to a professional. Most reputable salons offer a complimentary bang trim in-between hair cuts. If you must nip away at them yourself- take a center section of fringe and gently twist in the direction they sleep. Using sharp scissors “nibble” away at the end 1/4″ of hair. This keeps the ends soft and not choppy.

Tip #8:

You want perfect side-swept bangs but you have cowlick or part problems? You can retrain your hair- comb that fringe firmly to the side and secure with a couple of bobby pins before you go to bed at night. In a couple of weeks hair will be sleek or at least more obedient.

Tip #9:

Your bangs are sleek and sweeping, and they bring a ton of attention to the eye area. Now that the eyes are a focal point (no pun intended), make sure your eyebrows are well-groomed and not too thin or too light. A healthy brow density looks fresh. A makeup artist can teach you how to fill-in over tweezed brows, until they grow back.

Tip #10:

Here’s one for the guys: give short, texturized styles separation and hold, with a styling paste instead of a pomade. Pomades are too waxy and too shiny, and will not hold up in the warmer months ahead. Soften styling paste in the hands and use a “shoe shine” motion to place product mostly on the tips of the hair. The matte finish of styling paste looks modern and best of all, it won’t melt.
