I know there are a lot of girls out there who would love to know the secrets to a perfect blowout. Well, here’s a few pointers to try at home:
First things first, for us girls with curly, wavy or unruly hair you’ll need a great shampoo and conditioner meant to de-frizz and straighten. If you are on a budget, I suggest Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine. It smooths hair and puts moisture back in, plus it claims to make hair 5 times stronger. I’m not sure if this is true, but it definitely helps my hair stay straight.
I like to switch out my hair products from time to time to see how my hair responds. Other products that have worked for me include the L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert line. I was using the Vitamino Color shampoo and conditioner to keep my blond, well… blond. Each bottle is $20 and can be purchased at your local salon.
The next step is choosing styling products. This a really important step. Without proper styling products your hair will be left vulnerable and results might be unfavorable. Remember, you are going for straight so you will need something that smooths the hair follicle yet also helps protect against heat damage. The last thing you want is dry, brittle hair that breaks off.
I use Artec Kiwi Blow Silk and Artec Kiwi Blow-up Volume Gel. I put a dime size of the gel and one or two drops of the silk in my hands and rub it into my wet hair. Then I brush it through to make sure it is distributed evenly.
Your third step is the blowout. Make sure you have a hair clip at the ready because you’ll need to blow dry your hair in sections; about 3 or 4 depending on the thickness of your hair. You will also need the largest round brush you can find. I use the ERGO Ionic Ceramic brush.
Starting from the bottom and working your way up, you’ll want to clip the rest of your hair on top of your head so you can focus solely on the under part. If you are lucky to have a mirror both in front and in back of you, it would greatly help you see what you are doing. You’ll also want the temperature of your dryer to be hot, but not scolding, so play around with the settings as all hair dryers are not made the same.
When drying, always point the nozzle down so the hair cuticle dries smooth. Place the brush underneath the hair and never on top. You are using the brush to guide the hair and with a big round brush you will be able to dry a larger amount of hair quicker. The ionic brushes also minimize breakage and split ends, add luster and shine, help with manageability, control fly-aways, and reduce static electricity. When you are done with a section use the “cool shot” button on your hair dryer (the one that delivers less heat) and give that section a once over to lock the style in place.
For poker straight hair, you can use a straightening iron for sleeker look. To finish your sexy straight hairstyle, add another drop or two of the Blowout Silk to smooth any fly-aways and a spritz or two of hair spray and you’ll be set. You’ve just achieved ultimate straightness!
