At the ripe old age of 34, Joaquin Phoenix announced that he is retiring from acting Monday at a benefit for the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps, a charity by Paul Newman.

His final role will be a romantic drama with Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw entitled Two Lovers. The movie is scheduled for release on February 13th, 2009

“This will be my last performance as an actor. I’m not doing films anymore… I’ve been through that. I’ve done it… I’m dead serious.”

He wants to give up-and-comers, like Casey Affleck, a chance at better roles. Casey, by the way, is Phoenix’s brother-in-law; he is married to his sister Summer. Phoenix says, “It’s Casey’s time now.”

The two-time Oscar nominee is best known for his role as Johnny Cash in 2005’s Walk the Line and my favorite Gladiator as Commodus in 2000.

Joaquin Phoenix is giving up acting to pursue his music career. He learned to play the guitar to play Johnny Cash and is working on an album with Tim Burgess, the frontman for the group The Charlatans. No word on when his album will release.

Joaquin Phoenix will be back; I am sure of it.
