Basic Fruit Smoothie Recipe

  1. Start out by choose the fruit you’ll want in your smoothie. The most common are stawberry and bananas but you could really add almost anything. Just be aware that the more seeds in the fruit, the more you may taste in the smoothie. For this recipe we are going to recommend a banana and some other berry. The banana will help thicken the texture of the smoothie so you’ll be less likely to end up with blended juice.
  2. The base of the smoothie is used to give the smoothie added texture. As stated above, the banana is a natural thickener, but you can use frozen fruits or crushed ice. I personally think shaved ice is the best but not too many people have a shaved ice machine in their home. If you are going to add crushed ice cubes, you’ll need additional liquid to keep your blender from freezing. Orange juice works great for this but you could also use water or soy milk. Some people use frozen yogurt as the thickening agent for smoothies but I have found that it doesn’t taste nearly as good, and the added sugar content isn’t as healthy as an all-natural smoothie. How much fruit or juice you want is personal preference but I like to start with a little bit of juice and add more while the smoothie is blending to get just the right thickness. As the ice is crashed by the blender, it will sometimes get too thick so adding a little more juice can help.
  3. Put the ingredients in to the blender with the fruit and juice at the bottom. Again, you don’t want to freeze your blender blades. PUT THE LID ON THE BLENDER. I’m sure you can imagine the story behind my emphasising this point.
  4. Start the blender about 2-3 notches down from the highest setting. Some blenders are more power than others so you can gauge how much power you need for yourself.
  5. Once you start to see a slight wirlpool at the top, you can add any additional ingredients you may want. This could include additional fruit, more juice, protien power, etc.
  6. Make sure the lid is back on, then stop the blender. Wait a few seconds as the smoothie may release a bubble and you may not want fruit smoothie in your eye.
  7. The smoothie should already be cold due to the ice or frozen fruit so you can pour it directly into a glass and drink it but sip it slowly or you’ll end up with a brain freeze.
