The Nutrisystem Diet Plan in a Nutshell:

The NutriSystem Diet Plan is for those who don’t want to count calories or cook. It’s all about convenience, portion sizes and prepackaged foods. You select the foods you want to eat for that month from their website and they deliver it to your door step. The monthly shipments of food include 28 breakfasts, 28 lunches, 28 dinners and 28 desserts, and one week of free food.

On the NutriSystem Diet program women follow a 1,200 calorie plan and men 1,500 calories per day. The food is vacuum sealed and does not need to be refrigerated. A month’s worth of food cost between $280-310, plus addition costs for supplemental items, like salad greens, fruits, and dairy items.

There are over 120 different entrees and desserts to choose from that are balance in protein, fat and carbs. The diet is made up of 55% carbs, 25% protein, and 20% fat.

The NutriSystem Advanced plan promotes “good carbs” that are low-glycemic, low in fat, high in fiber and packed with healthy protein. The meals also contain soluble fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. In addition to the pre-packaged meals you are supposed to supplement with 6 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. To help control hunger and keep your metabolism going strong dieters eat 5 times a day on the NutriSystem plan.

A 12-week self-guided “Mindset Makeover” behavioral guide is given to each dieter to help change the way you look at food. It was written by Temple University obesity expert Gary Foster, PhD. NutriSystem.com provides you with an online weight loss community and counselors who are available online or over the phone.

Exercise is also encouraged while on the NutriSystem weight loss program. Dieters also recieve a fitness demonstration CD with various fitness plans like yoga, weight training and aerobics.

Oodora’s Opinion:

When I was in college I got a job working for NutriSystem.com as one of their online nutritional counselors. I worked the night shift with other young slackers who wanted a cush job that didn’t exert too much energy. Their headquarters is right outside of Philadelphia, where I’m from, so it just made sense at the time.

Back then I was a nutrition major (before I got a clue and switched to art), but after working there for a year and tasting how horrible that pre-packaged food was I decided I could no longer push a product I didn’t believe was truly healthy. I felt shameful that I was getting paid to promote a lifestyle I would never endorse. Kinda like Britney Spears who got caught drinking a Pepsi when she was under contract with Coke…or was it the other way around?

NutriSystem does not get the Oodora stamp of approval. Eat real food, not one with an eternal shelf life. That should tell you something, right? NutriSystem also doesn’t prepare you for the real world. How are you suppose to eat when you don’t have one of their martian meals at hand? And don’t be deceived by highly paid D-list celebrities that NutriSystem is the way to go. You are smarter than that!
