High blood pressure is a common occurrence in America these days due to a poor diet that lacks quality nutrients. Many people have high blood pressure and don’t even know it. High blood pressure usually does not cause any symptoms. A normal blood pressure reading is 120/80 mmHg.
There are many factors that can cause high blood pressure including, weight, physical activity, smoking, sodium intake, potassium intake, stress, alcohol, age and genetics.
These days many people are looking for alternative treatments in addition to those prescribed by their primary doctor. Here is a list of natural remedies for high blood pressure.
Hawthorn
Hawthorn is considered the world’s best cardiac tonic. For centuries hawthorn has been used by herbalists to treat high blood pressure and maintain a healthy heart. It increases blood flow to the heart and brain and strengthens the heart’s contractions which increases oxygen production so the heart does not have to work so hard to circulate blood.
Hawthorn is packed with bioflavonoids, which are not only powerful antioxidants, but also help relax and dilate the arteries. These bioflavonoids also strengthen the blood vessel walls.
The usual dosage for hawthorn is 300 to 600 mg 3 times a day of an extract standardized to contain about 2% to 3% flavonoids or 18% to 20% procyanidins.
Garlic
Garlic is a natural blood thinner and has similar affects to aspirin. Garlic may interact with other prescription blood thinning drugs and supplements such as vitamin E and gingko and should not be used before surgery.
Garlic is also a natural antibiotic and powerful antioxidant that can help the body protect itself again damaging free radicals.
Raw, organic garlic is best because it yields the highest amounts of sulfur and thus health benefit. If garlic upsets your stomach, garlic supplements are also an option.
For high blood pressure take 200 to 300 mg 3 time per day.
CoEnzyme Q10 or CoQ10
The supplement CoQ10 is another natural supplement that may lower high blood pressure. It is a natural occurring substance found in the human body and acts as a catalyst for numerous chemical reactions. It is a powerful antioxidant that destroys free radicals. The heart and the liver contain the highest levels of CoQ10 and plays an important role in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as congestive heart failure.
Taking cholesterol medications like Lipitor, Lovacol, and Mevacor can inhibit CoEnzyme Q10 production in the body.
Dietary supplementation of CoEnzyme Q10 for healthy adults is between 30-90 mg per day.
Fish Oil
Fish oil has many health benefits such as lowering high blood pressure, high cholesterol, helps in weight loss, depression, anxiety, and diabetes to name a few. The reason fish oil is so beneficial is the presence of Omega 3 essential fatty acids, Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
The Omega 3 fatty acids helps to reduce cardiovascular diseases, prevents the build up of triglycerides and atherosclerosis in coronary patients.
Fish with the most abundance amount of fish oil are mackerel, rainbow trout, lake trout, halibut, herring, sea bass, sardines, swordfish, oysters, albacore tuna, blue fin tuna, yellow fin tuna, turbot, pilchards, anchovies and salmon.
