500 lb Giant Catfish in Tennessee from 1914

The famous black and white photo of a 500 lb monster catfish caught in 1914 by Warren McConnell is thought by many to be a fake photo but being that Hardin County is the self proclaimed “Catfish Capitol of the World” and promotes a National Catfish Derby each year, many are very reluctant to admit that this photo is a hoax.

    This photo is not a fake. It has been altered though. The cat is very big still, but I believe that the tail has been cut off and replaced by a big bent railroad broom or duster. The dorsal fin is too low on the body and the tail seems too dark for the body. A fake, but no fake. I still think the fish is well over 100 pounds, but not 500.
