Experts say that the sudden popularity of the name Emma in the 2000s is attributed to the TV show Friends. That’s the name Jennifer Aniston’s character, Rachel, named her baby. According to the Social Security Administration, Emma hadn’t been a popular name in the U.S. since the 1880s.

Similarly, Ava unpopular until shortly after actress Reese Witherspoon gave her daughter that name in 1999.
