Just because you work for Taco Bell doesn’t mean you look like you eat at Taco Bell. I thought it was quite comical when my friend asked me to sub a Pilates Mat class for her over at the Taco Bell headquarters in Irvine, CA. I was surprised to see they have a sufficient gym filled with cardio equipment, weight machines and even a separate sound proof room for group exercises classes that easily fit 10 normally sized people that don’t gauge themselves daily with multiple servings from the Taco Bell menu.

When I arrived on my first day security was tight in the chalupa loving location and I had to get a badge from the front desk attendant who was sitting on her own little island surrounded by faux taco bell interiors and menu boards. There was even a drive-thru menu baord at the entrance that I couldn’t stop laughing at as I walked by. All I could think was I am going to help people get in shape that work for a company that has greatly attributed to our puffy society.

Oh, and for your intellectual pleasure a chalupa means boat in Spanish and is a tortilla shaped like a small boat and fried until crisp then filled with meat, cheese and vegetables. Which reminds me of a skit by comedian Jim Gaffigan who basically spouts that all Mexican food is meat, cheese, tortillas and vegetables. Not always true, but Taco Bell is tortillas, roadkill, cheese, lard and a tummy ache for days. I’ve only eaten at Taco Bell once in my life and was taken unwillingly. Never again.

Back to the point at hand - the class was filled with 6 very nice, agile and for the most part athletic people who had no signs of participating in regular unhealthy eating behaviors. And much like the majority of active Orange County residents they want you to kick their butts, or abs in my case. I will be back for the next couple of weeks until my friend returns, but in the meantime I will teach Pilates to anyone and everyone willing to participate, even if I don’t agree with the fast food giant.
