Dog Hair DyeThe other day I was at a local outdoor mall and I see this girl walking her shih tzu. She had the dog’s tail dyed hot pink and purple! I thought this was a bit much. It’s a dog for god sake, not a Barbie doll.

So I wondered if maybe this was a trend I wasn’t aware of. Turns out it’s popular in Japan, go figure, where everything is pop art.

I doubt this is safe or humane. Yes, I think it’s dog cruelty.

Dog Dyed Hot PinkJust because we are the superior race does not make it OK. Leave dogs alone! It’s bad enough to put silly sweaters on them.

Am I the only one who thinks this is loony toons?

My life is too busy for me to dye any of my dogs for reasons of (my) vanity, but I’m getting ready to use food color to dye one of my small dogs who is white, brown. She’s being picked on my the rest of the pack who have also picked on a white foster dog and another medium-sized dog I have who is mostly white. If I color her brown and the other dogs are less aggressive, it certainly would be an easy solution to this vexing problem. If it doesn’t work, then it’ll grow out and I’ll still have my little white dog I have to keep separated from the rest of the pack until I can come up with a different solution.

Dyeing my Maltese X was one of the best things I ever did for her. She has a double row of teeth in her lower jaw and is not the prettiest of doglets. But I love her dearly. I am a pet groomer and obviously need to have my pooches looking well groomed. My Maltese has had her tail and ears dyed aqua marine, mauve, violet and pink and she just loves it. Never has she had so much attention when out walking from children. I had a small girl come up and ask if she could pat my doglet. Her mother couldn’t believe it, as this little girl was scared of all dogs and had never ever touched one. Mother’s eyes glistened as she looked at her child patting my fluffy pink tailed and eared doglet. I also have dyed my black miniature poodles ears and tail tips in Christmas colours - gold, green and red. Again, children love her. Both my doglets sit in my salon in foils patiently waiting for the colour to take. I believe they love the attention and will continue to colour my doglets and as well as my doggie customers. There are some very good quality canine dyes on the market and as for human dyes are quite safe if used correctly. There is no need to let the products touch the skin on humans or dogs, so skin problems should not occur.

Of course, each to their own ! Some love colouring on dogs, others hate it. Whatever ! As with any other grooming process, we aim to give the pets a postive and caring grooming experience. I have made one rule with colouring, I will not colour the entire dog. My preference is for artistic highlights and patterns, rather than turn a whole dog into another colour !!

I personally think its ridiculous, i have a maltese and a shih tzu, im currently studying to become a vet nurse and think its disgusting, my 2 dogs do however wear jumpers when they go out for their walks, as i have their hair cut short otherwise (especially my maltese as has no undercoat) they would become extremely cold. Commenting on Marsie’s point, are looks everything to you?? you say your dog has a double row of teeth in her lower jaw, not the prettiest to look at, doesnt the dye just bring more attention to her and also dont you love her, why do you care about what she looks like, i would have thought that thats all that matters. And using a childs point of view, well my maltese gets lots of attention of children who are unsure of dogs and hes his natural colour WHITE, not PINK OR BLUE.
I can understand Greens comment, as shes dying her dog for the sake of her dog, not for her own vanity. that is a cause that is worthy but marsie’s is disgusting, and why did she need her ears and tail dyed, if you had only dyed around the jaw ok, still not great but more understandable. Honestly this is what the world is coming too, god help us.

p.s. by the way how do you know your dog “loves” it, im sure they dont particularly have any say in the matter, just because they wag their tail to you doesnt mean they “love” it. honestly, how dumb can you get

I can tell you first hand that if you use the right dyes it is in NO WAY harmful to the animal, I am a certified dog groomer and have been grooming for many years, I have also done my share of dying dogs including one of my own. The dye I use is all natural and made from plants and vegtables it contains no harsh chemicals. Although I must say that if your dog is the kind to be prone to allergies, I would be careful using it as in using many othe dog products. They also have recently come out with dyes made just for dogs!

I get asked so many questions when my dog is colored! One of the most common is “Do you think he cares/ knows he’s a different color?” and my answer is yes! my dog knows he looks different and LOVES it he gets so much more attention from people.

If I for one second thought that I was putting my dog in danger by doing this I would not do it!!

I, personally think that dying your dog is utterly ridiculous!
Why would you get, a lovely dog, then dye it a totally different colour? Example: PINK?!
      It’s un-natural and… to be honest… a bit stupid.
I don’t understand why on Earth, you would dye your dog.
Animals are NOT an accessory, they are living, breathing things.
If you want something pink to carry around, then buy a purse.

the question is: “Why dye your dogs hair?”
You’re either just plain bored and have nothing better to do than harrass your dog,
      or
You saw a dog with it’s hair dyed, and thought it looked ‘cool’

And dying a dogs hair could, irritate their skin, it can stress them out during the progress, it COULD cause them to be a little self-concious… causing them to hide more.

Okay, not self-concious, but they do notice when something’s different about them.
Like I lived in Arizona, and my sister had to shave her dog, (it’s Arizona, it’s hot) and after getting shaved, he would hide under things for days, like the table, the porch, until he felt relaxed enough to come out from wherever he was hiding.

But that’s MY opinion, and I know that many of you have different opinions, but that is mine.

    6. chynadoll says:

i don’t see anything wrong with this at all. i could understand if it were about people giving their dogs fashion piercings but it’s just dying their fur.

Most dogs i have seen really don’t seem to care, they act as if nothing is different.

    7. Caroline says:

Uh….reality check. Dogs can’t SEE COLORS! They don’t know they’re pink or purple. I think it’s silly and frivolous, but as long as harmless dye is used, who cares? The dogs that end up getting dye jobs are babied and fussed over, I wouldn’t call them abused.

    8. Briana says:

I am in school for vterinary and i ove dogs dearly. dog dye does not harm the dog so technically there is nothin wrong with dying your dog. And also, its “your” dog. you bought it so therefore you can do anything you want as long as it does not harm the dog. I personally love doggie colouring and if you dont like it then dont do it. theres no need to complain about other people

    9. Sophia says:

Personal choice, if you dont like it…dont look at it, quite simple.
My dog is white but she’s been pink, red, blue colours b4 & didnt harm her in any way! As long as u use the right products your dog will be fine :o) she will be purple by the end of next week & every1 i know (including strangers in the street on walks) compliment on how she looks!
She’s not a toy dog either, shes a boxer X lurcher, it doesnt look ridiculous, it adds to her character.
If any of u have a clue about dogs u’l know dogs react to your energy / emotions… so charlotte no 1 is dumb thinking THEIR dog loves it!
      Get a grip!!
