A report from Paris says that a section of the Eiffel Tower is going on sale.
The Eiffel Tower, visited by about 6 million people per year, was built for the 1889 World’s Fair that celebrated the centennial of the French Revolution.
In 1983, the original 1911-step staircase leading up the tower was removed so that elevators could be installed. Gustave Eiffel himself climbed the staircase in the 1889 inaugural ceremony.
When the staircase was removed, it was cut into 24 separate pieces and auctioned off to collectors and museums around the world.
Now, a special 14-foot section is for sale that once helped connect the second to the third level of this historical monument. It goes on sale Monday, November 19th at the Hotel Drouot auction house and according to auctioneer Remi Ader, is expected to fetch between $29,000 and $44,000.
