This is quite a shocker if you are a fan of Grey’s Anatomy. Brooke Smith, the actress that plays Dr. Erica Hahn, has been fired from Grey’s Anatomy. Last week she realized that she was gay after having a relationship with Callie, played by Sara Ramirez.
The gay/lesbian storyline has abruptly been erased from upcoming scripts and this Thursday’s episode will be her last. ABC execs were not pleased with Brooke’s character and wanted her off the show. Newcomer Melissa George from Alias, who joins the cast this month, was to be a lesbian character on the series.
“Melissa came on as a lesbian character,” a reliable insider tells me, “but they changed the script and now she isn’t. She starts off flirting with Callie but it never goes anywhere.”
Brooke Smith told Entertainment Weekly, “I was very excited when they told me that Erica and Callie were going to have this relationship. And I really hoped we were going to show what happens when two women fall in love and that they were going to treat it like any heterosexual couple on TV. And so I was surprised and disappointed when they just suddenly told me that they couldn’t write for my character any more.”
Dr. Hahn was my least favorite character and I’m sure others would agree; her leaving will not be as big a shake up as the dismissal of Isaiah Washington.
